How to measure El Buen Fin without inflated reports

How to measure El Buen Fin without inflated reports

How do I measure what El Buen Fin really produced for my store, without trusting inflated platform numbers?

El Buen Fin concentrates a large part of the year's online sales into a few days, which makes it the week when measurement matters most and the week when platform numbers are least reliable. The 2026 edition runs from Friday November 13 to Tuesday November 17, as announced (details on the official site). Everything below is meant to be done before, during and after those five days, and the most important part is the part you do before.

Why Buen Fin inflates platform numbers

The causes are the same as any other week, amplified. We cover each in why Meta, Google, GA4 and your store never match; these are the ones that grow most during a sales event.

  • View-through credit soaks up demand you already had. Campaigns reach more people and more of them buy regardless, so a one-day view window credits ads with purchases they did not cause.
  • Several platforms claim the same buyers. Retargeting on Meta, Google and TikTok at once, plus email and WhatsApp, means one order is claimed several times.
  • Brand search and direct traffic spike. Intent created by TV, influencers or the event itself lands on brand search and gets credited to the search campaign that caught it.
  • Refunds and cancellations arrive after the reports are read. Unpaid orders, cancellations and returns come days or weeks later and are not subtracted from what the platforms reported.
  • Settings change mid-event. A new campaign, a bid strategy switch or a window change during the event makes the week incomparable with any other.

Before: one to two weeks ahead

  • Take a baseline. Record the last four weeks of settled orders, revenue, conversion rate and what each platform claimed, all in your store's time zone.
  • Check tracking end to end. Place a test order and confirm the purchase reaches your store, your pixels and the server-side events, with the same event ID in browser and server so Meta deduplicates them.
  • Tag everything. Every campaign, email, WhatsApp broadcast and influencer link gets UTMs with one naming convention, in lowercase.
  • Freeze attribution settings. Write down each platform's window and view settings and do not touch them until the analysis is done.
  • Use channel-specific codes. A different discount code per influencer or partner gives you a second signal for traffic that tracking cannot see.
  • Decide how unpaid orders count. Orders paid later by bank transfer or cash are created before they are paid, and some never are. Decide now whether a sale counts at creation or at payment, and apply it to every channel.

During: the five days

  • Watch the store, not the platforms. Track settled and pending orders hourly in your store; use platform numbers for pacing, not for judging.
  • Watch for duplicates. If one platform's purchases jump well above your store's orders for the same hours, check for events firing twice.
  • Watch the checkout. Errors, slow pages and payment failures cost more this week than any campaign decision. A drop in conversion rate with steady traffic is a site problem first.
  • Do not change windows or conversion settings. Change budgets if you must, but log every change with the time it was made.

After: two to four weeks later

  • Settle before you judge. Wait until cancellations, unpaid orders and refunds have come in, then compare gross and settled revenue per channel. We explain why this gap is invisible to ad platforms in refunds and cancellations: the gap no ad platform subtracts.
  • Run the ceiling test. Add up the purchases every platform claims for the event and compare with settled orders for the same days. The excess is double counting.
  • Separate new from returning buyers. Use your store's full order history, not each platform's definition, to see how many Buen Fin buyers were really new.
  • Measure the season, not the weekend. Compare the six weeks around the event with the same weeks of a normal period or last year. Part of the peak is demand pulled forward from the weeks before and after.
  • Judge on profit. Discounts cut margin, so a record revenue weekend can be a weak profit weekend. Compare cost per settled order and gross profit, not only ROAS.

What to take into Hot Sale and the next Buen Fin

Save the baseline, the settings you froze, the codes you used and the settled results per channel in one document. The next event is only measurable against this one if the definitions stay the same. For the list of settings that make reported ROAS look better than it is, keep 8 things that inflate your reported ROAS at hand while you plan.

Common questions

When is El Buen Fin 2026?

From Friday November 13 to Tuesday November 17, 2026, as announced. It includes Monday November 16, the official holiday for the November 20 commemoration.

Why does Meta report more Buen Fin sales than my store?

During Buen Fin more people see your ads and more people buy anyway, so view-through credit captures sales the ads did not cause, and several platforms claim the same buyers. Refunds and cancellations after the event are not subtracted from what the platform reported.

Should I change my attribution window for Buen Fin?

No. Keep the same settings before, during and after, so the event can be compared with the weeks around it. Changing the window mid-event changes the number without changing a sale.

When can I judge whether Buen Fin paid off?

Two to four weeks after it ends, once cancellations, unpaid orders and refunds have settled. The gross numbers of the weekend overstate what you kept.

How do I know how much of Buen Fin was really incremental?

Compare the whole season, for example the six weeks around the event, with the same weeks of a normal period or the previous year, instead of comparing only the five days with an average week. Part of the peak is demand that moved from the weeks around it.
